Child Abuse Allegations in the Brangelina Divorce Make Their Split So Much Sadder

We weren't ready for this Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie story to get more traumatic, but it has: According to TMZ, Brad Pitt could be under investigation for child abuse after an incident on September 14 (one day before their separation, according to Angelina's court documents). TMZ's source says Brad got "verbally abusive" and "physical" with one of their kids, and someone anonymously reported his behavior to authorities. Yikes. Those are serious allegations to make, so right now, we're just watching and waiting and hoping their kids are safe and, as with any impending divorce, are able to wade through the emotional baggage of their parents' split.

There's been some back and forth about whether this is true or not (TMZ had a source who said it was, but US Weekly talked to the Los Angeles Police Department, who said it wasn't, and E! Online talked to the LA Department of Children and Family Services, who would neither confirm nor deny), but the latest is that People got a statement from the FBI confirming that they are "evaluating the situation." So, basically, they're not starting an investigation -- they're just deciding if there needs to be one.

But if nothing else, the FBI's statement confirms that there were allegations placed against Brad (not that they're necessary true ... just that they exist) and that's really sad and really scary. According to People, the incident took place while the family was on its private plane -- Brad was drunk and argued with Angelina and with one of their kids, and the argument got "out of control." People's source says Brad is insisting he didn't hurt anyone.

That's a lot to digest and, clearly, there's still a lot we don't know about what happened that day -- or in the days and weeks and months leading up to their epic split. If Angelina was worried about Brad's alleged behavior and "the health of the family" (a phrase a lawyer for Angie specifically used in the original divorce announcement), then taking her kids and walking away (especially knowing how that'd send us all into this insane gossip frenzy) was an incredibly brave and courageous thing to do.

Of course, it is possible that this is just a case of spouses arguing or a parent getting frustrated and losing his or her temper at the kids, which we all know happens sometimes -- and isn't automatically abuse. But something about Angelina's immediate decision definitely adds fuel to the speculative fire.

In any case, there's a lot weighing on this situation. There are six kids caught in the middle of whatever is going on, and above all else, we want them to be safe. Hopefully, Brad and Angelina can say the same.
