Patrick Dempsey's Marriage Real Talk Is the Kind of Honesty We Need All the Time

Celebrities may live in the public eye, but most of the time, they (and their PR teams) put a nice, glossy polish on life's negative moments to make it seem like the day-to-day stuff is just easier for them. So when Patrick Dempsey opened up about fighting to save his marriage, well, let's just say we have a whole new appreciation for the actor.

The 50-year-old Bridget Jones's Baby star came thisclose to losing his family when his wife, makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, filed for divorce after 15 years of marriage. Patrick was enjoying a ton of success on the long-running Grey's Anatomy and throwing himself full throttle (pun intended) into his car racing obsession, but things at home weren't great.

In an interview with People he said:

I always struggled with the question of sacrifice. But I became frustrated with the lack of quality of experience in my life. I wanted to get to that deeper level, and not just skirt the surface. You can only do one thing at a time and do it well.

In fact, Patrick admitted he actually wanted out of Grey's earlier in an attempt to place more attention on his personal life, to "slow down a bit in order to get focused and find out what it is that I want." While it took a little longer to end his days as McDreamy than he originally would have liked, the payoff was huge for his marriage.

We decided it was time to get in there and work on our individual issues and our issues as a couple. I wasn't prepared to give up on her and she wasn't either. We were both committed. We both wanted to fight.

The idea of a celebrity admitting to real-life struggles with major consequences is incredibly refreshing, especially considering family and relationships are something all of us work on every single day, no matter our marital status.

Patrick says he and Jillian worked on their issues both individually and as a couple in an effort to call off the divorce, working hard to prove to their three children that not all is lost in time of great hardship. "We want to be role models for our children -- if you have differences, you can work them out," he told the mag.

Kudos to them for fighting for something they both felt was worth saving and sharing their story with the world.
