Kate Middleton Throws Royal Tradition to the Wind With Shoulder-Baring Dress

Duchess Bare Shoulders! On Wednesday, Kate Middleton presented the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2016 prize at the Natural History Museum in London, and her outfit -- as usual -- caused quite the stir. However, instead of people talking about how flawless the duchess looked at the event (which she did), no one could get over the fact that Kate decided to wear an off-the-shoulder dress for the occasion. What does the queen think?!

Bucking royal tradition of being covered up at royal engagements, Kate, who always sticks to the knee-length-or-below rule for her dresses, decided to show a little skin in a stunning white knit midi length Barbara Casasola dress. The duchess, who looked absolutely flawless, completed the look with strappy (sky-high) nude heels, a sparkly clutch, and her signature loose-flowing locks. It may not be a typically royal outfit, but it's one of Kate's most beautiful looks to date.

Since giving birth to Princess Charlotte, Kate has been upping her fashion game -- and taking more risks. She's strayed from her tried-and-true British designers recently in favor of looks from Dolce & Gabbana, and even Zara and Banana Republic. Clearly, Kate is making up her own fashion rules as she goes -- and clearly it's working.

The queen, who has weights sewn into all of her skirts and dresses to avoid any unfortunate mishaps, may not be thrilled with Kate's more modern take on the royal wardrobe. But no doubt, everyone else -- including Prince William -- is loving it.
