How would Prince William and Kate Middleton react if one or more of their children came out as gay? We may have an answer, as the Duke of Cambridge addressed that particular topic at a recent Pride event. He was at a charity event hosted by the Albert Kennedy Trust, which works with homeless LGBTQ youths (or those in hostile environments), when he was asked how he'd handle it.
Royal reporter Rebecca English for The Daily Mail shared that Will said he'd be "absolutely fine" if one of his kids is gay.
A young man who did not want to identified reportedly asked William, "If your child one day in the future said, 'Oh I'm gay, oh I'm lesbian,' whatever, how would you react?"
He did say that the thought "worries" him, but only because of how other people might treat his kids if they came out as gay.
He also said that he's been talking to Kate about this issue, and how they will handle it if it happens.
According to The Telegraph, Will added, "The one thing I'd be worried about is how they -- particularly the roles my children fill -- is how that is going to be interpreted and seen ... So Catherine and I have been doing a lot of talking about it to make sure they were prepared. I think communication is so important with everything, in order to help understand it you've got to talk a lot about stuff and make sure how to support each other and how to go through the process."
He continued, "It worries me, not because of them being gay, it worries me as to how everyone else will react and perceive it and then the pressure is then on them."
No longer are the days when being gay just isn't an option -- even for royalty. The first same-sex wedding happened last fall for a member of the extended royal family.
Queen Elizabeth's third cousin once removed, Lord Ivor Mountbatten, married his partner, James Coyle in September.
Of course it might be different if someone directly in line to the throne, like Prince George, Princess Charlotte, or Prince Louis wanted a same-sex marriage, but the world has changed so much, so quickly, that it might not even be an issue by the time they're old enough to think about getting married.
No matter who Will and Kate's kids end up being, we're sure of one thing -- they'll support them no matter what.
The love they have for their kiddos is so obvious, and they are all about the mental health. We can't imagine them not supporting their kids, no matter who they decide to love.
