Justin Bieber Got a Face Tattoo & Its Subtlety Is Kind of a Miracle

Aside from his angelic voice and general talent for releasing fantastic pop songs, Justin Bieber is mostly famous for his antics. We're not upset about this, really -- if we could fight Orlando Bloom while Leonardo DiCaprio watched, we probably would, too. So, history considered, we can't really say we were particularly shocked when Justin Instagrammed a pic of his new face tattoo. Honestly, the most surprising part is how subtle it is. And that, mind you, is not a word we ever thought we'd be applying to Justin Bieber.

We also never thought we'd be describing a face tattoo as a "pleasant surprise." And yet, there really is no better way to talk about Justin's latest ink:

Theoretically, that teeny spot on his face could just be dirt. Or, like, a mole we never noticed before. But tattoo artist JonBoy Valena Instagrammed Justin's face from another, better lit angle, and it does, in fact, look like a tattoo:

E! News reached out to JonBoy, who confirmed that he did tattoo a small cross on Justin's face. According to JonBoy, the miniature cross is a symbol for his faith (groundbreaking!) and a reminder of his journey to find purpose with God.

Part of us is looking at this as a reminder that tattoos are permanent and faces are visible (complex stuff, we know), but another part of us is seeing this as a sign that our baby boy Justin is growing up. Old Justin would have gotten a face tattoo of, like, the Calvin Klein symbol on his forehead. Slowly maturing Justin chose a barely-there representation of his faith. We feel okay calling this progress.
