We're not even really sure where to begin with this. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar recently celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary, and to mark the occasion, he wrote up some "lessons" for a happy marriage on the family's blog.

He started with the "Seven Basic Needs of a Husband."-placeholder

He started with the "Seven Basic Needs of a Husband."

These include (but we're pretty sure aren't limited by):

  1. A man needs a wife who is loyal and supportive.
  2. A man needs a wife who honors his leadership.
  3. A man needs a wife who develops inward and outward beauty.
  4. A man needs a wife who will make appeals, not demands.
  5. A man needs a wife who understands his need for time alone with God.
  6. A man needs a grateful wife.
  7. A man needs a wife who will be praised by others.
And then there was the list what wives need.-placeholder

And then there was the list what wives need.

  1. A wife needs a husband who demonstrates spiritual leadership.
  2. A wife needs to know she is meeting her husband’s vital needs.
  3. A wife needs a husband who cherishes her.
  4. A wife needs a husband who protects her.
  5. A wife needs to have intimate communication with her husband.
  6. A wife needs a husband who honors her.
  7. A wife needs a husband who invests in her life.

Of course Jim Bob linked to a couple of more in-depth articles on the subject of how wives exist to serve their husbands, courtesy of the Institute in Basic Life Principles.

It includes such gems as "Helping her husband fulfill his goals and dreams is a wife’s main responsibility" and "A wife finds security and purpose in knowing that she is meeting needs in her husband’s life that no other woman can meet."

There are also instructions to "establish boundaries" such as bedtime for your wife if you notice she is neglecting her responsibilities because of exhaustion. How about pitching in with the laundry or vacuuming instead?? For the love, people.

Remember ladies, you exist to serve your husband and should never question his authority! If you do, then you must "ask your husband to tell you when he senses that you have a resistant spirit, and then repent and ask for his forgiveness."

Ask his forgiveness when you have a different opinion than him. Yeah. Not even sure what to say about that.

We're going to take a hard pass on this "advice."

If Michelle enjoys this sort of dictatorial relationship with her husband, then that's her choice. For other people out there seeking to have a healthy, adult, mutually respectful marriage, they might want to toss this garbage where it belongs -- in the trash can.
