Melissa McCarthy Becomes MTV's First Female 'Comedic Genius' & Her Speech Is Everything

In addition to looking smokin' hot in a leather jumpsuit, Melissa McCarthy made history at the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night for being the first woman to win the comedic genius award. She obviously deserves it, but because she's as humble as she is hilarious, she was quick to credit all the funny women who came before her -- including her mother, Sandy Lynn McCarthy. So, naturally, we came out of the night laughing, crying, and loving Melissa more than ever.

McCarthy's list of influences also included greats like Carol Burnett, Phyllis Diller, Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Diane Keaton, and Lily Tomlin.

But she notes that she didn't just love these women -- McCarthy specifically says she "studied" them. Subtle as it may be, we love her nod to all the time and thought behind her comedy, and the reminder that getting to where she is really has been work. Funny work, sure. But work all the same.

It's an important message to send to the young audiences the MTV Movie Awards attracts, and an important list of funny women to pass on to them. And, flawless as usual, McCarthy delivered it all with a wink and a jab at Kevin Hart.

If your thoughts are something like, "How the eff is it even possible that no women have won this award before?" remember two things: First, women never get the credit they deserve. Second, this particular award has only been around for a few years, and while Melissa McCarthy is the first woman to win, she's also only the third person to win, ever.

Still, in our perfect world, three out of three Comedic Genius awards would have gone to women. Ah, well. Maybe next year.
