17 Celebrity Odd Couples Who Had Us at Hello (PHOTOS)

The initial response to these unexpected celebrity pairings ranged from surprise to bewilderment, but once audiences saw the lovebirds together, it was clear that they were smitten with one another — and who doesn't want to root for love? In the case of Dax Shepard coupling up with Kristen Bell, the surprise was more due to Shepard's goofy persona (at the time he was known mostly as one of Ashton Kutcher's prankster pals on Punk'd).

In other match-ups it was a huge age difference that raised eyebrows. Whatever the particulars of each relationship, what the following odd celebrity couples have in common is how quickly they stole our hearts.

  • Christina Hendricks & Geoffrey Arend

You might assume that actor Geoffrey Arend aggressively pursued Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, his wife since 2009, but it was the bodacious redhead who made the first move! The two were introduced by Vincent Kartheiser, who played Pete on Mad Men, in 2006 -- and Hendricks was instantly intrigued. "He had amazing hair and was all dishevelled," Hendricks has said of their initial meeting. "He just came in with this very high energy. He was just charming, funny, and very magnetic.” Hendricks has even admitted to being the first to utter the "L" word after a string of dates!

  • Cameron Diaz & Benji Madden

Who could've guessed that after dating a string of hunky types like Matt Dillon, Justin Timberlake, and Bradley Cooper, Hollywood's highest-paid Latina actress, Cameron Diaz, would find her "happily ever after" with tatted rocker Benji Madden? But sure enough, the couple celebrated its first wedding anniversary in January. Just days after his anniversary, Madden gushed about his bride on Instagram, posting the cover of her upcoming book, Longevity, with the caption, "I couldn't be more proud of my bad ass wife. She wakes up every day on a mission to try to make the world a better place."

  • Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton

Gwen Stefani fans were shocked when the singer split from her husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale, in August 2015. What they didn't expect, however, was how quickly Gwen would find another love — or who with. In the latter half of 2015, Stefani and Voice costar country singer Blake Shelton began dating, just as both were coping with their own divorces. By November, they were officially an item. "It was a really super-unexpected gift to find a friend, somebody who happened to be going through the exact same thing as me, literally mirroring my experience," Stefani said of connecting with Shelton. "I don’t think it’s an accident that that happened. It saved me." Though she hasn't used the "L" word officially yet, she's certainly hinted at her feeling in her new album!

  • The Weeknd & Bella Hadid

Back in December 2015, tabloids speculated that after seven months of dating, model Bella Hadid and singer The Weeknd were "taking a break." In February, Hadid and The Weeknd dismissed any speculation by making their first red carpet appearance together at the Grammys. Earlier that day, Bella wished her boo a happy birthday on Instagram, posting a pic of him sipping champagne and captioning it, "One year and you're still my favorite person on the planet." That's so cute we almost can't feel our faces.

Tennis champ Serena Williams and rapper/actor Common started dating in 2007, when she appeared in his "I Want You" music video. When they split in 2010, fans were devastated — and so, apparently, was Common, who has since admitted he was the one to get dumped. Even four years after their split, Common said he was still healing. "If I'm in it as much as I was with Serena, as much as I loved her, it takes time to heal and find that peace to be able to move on," Common told Uptown magazine.

A 22-year age difference was not enough to stop the sparks from flying between Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart when they met at the 2002 Golden Globes. After eight years of dating, the Indiana Jones and Star Wars star wed the Ally McBeal actress during a June 2010 ceremony in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Flockhart has said the age difference is a "non-issue," adding, "sometimes I feel very much older than Harrison."

  • Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez

Supercouple "Bennifer" was born in 2002, when Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck costarred in the cinematic trainwreck known as Gigli. Initially Affleck fans turned their noses up at J.Lo, claiming she was too "hood" for the Good Will Hunting star. J.Lo fans, meanwhile, dismissed Affleck as a meathead who couldn't match her level of fabulousness. Eventually most people became Bennifer believers — especially when Lopez flashed her 6.1-carat pink diamond engagement ring.

  • Dax Shepard & Kristen Bell

Parenthood star Dax Shepard is well aware that Kristen Bell is seriously out of his league. "Guys should be excited that I got Kristen Bell," Shepard told Playboy in 2012, a year before he wed Bell. "It should be, 'Oh good, a normal-looking guy got her. Maybe I'll get me a Kristen Bell.' But guys hate my guts for always dating women I have no right to be with." By now, this sweet and goofy couple has won over any skeptics and naysayers. Their homemade "Africa" video, set to the classic Toto song and featuring footage from a pre-kids vacation, received 5 million likes on YouTube.

After years of nurturing a platonic friendship, Sean Penn and Charlize Theron started dating in December 2013. During their 1.5 years together, they were so vocal about their bond that fans couldn't help but cheer for them. In March 2015, Penn told Esquire U.K. that he was surprised to find love at age 53. "To run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer feeling," he said.

  • Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban

When news surfaced that movie star Nicole Kidman had married country crooner Keith Urban after only one month of dating, everyone figured it was one of those fly-by-night marriages that would end up in a quickie divorce. But after a decade together, these two Aussies still can't keep their hands off each other, with shows of PDA at every red carpet event. Urban recently shared his thoughts on how to maintain a a successful marriage. "Keep dating your wife," he told ET. "I'm still trying to get her to go out with me."

In 2013 Jay Z admitted that he started dating Beyonce around 2001, when they posed together for a Vanity Fair cover. Some wondered why the stunning, sweet Beyonce would be drawn to a rapper — it just didn't seem to fit her wholesome persona. Whatever the reason behind their chemistry, they've been crazy in love for nearly 15 years, six of them as man and wife.

  • Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon

Skeptics rang the alarm when, in April 2008, pop diva Mariah Carey wed Wild 'n Out host Nick Cannon after only six weeks of dating. Their union seemed to make no logical sense — not only was Cannon 11 years younger than Carey, but he was also known as a jokester whereas his new wife had rarely shown a silly side. Once audiences saw them together — cracking jokes, kissing, and holding hands — they fell in love with the couple. The arrival of "Dem Babies," twins Moroccan and Monroe, seemed to complete the happy family. We were all blindsided then when, in 2014, Cannon announced their separation.

Well, alright, alright, alright! That's what we thought about the romance between Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and Texan stud Matthew McConaughey, which blossomed on the set of their 2005 film Sahara. At the time he was known for having been caught naked playing the bongos and smoking pot, and she was a bona fide movie star. "There's a bit of a language barrier, but it's like poetry when it happens," McConaughey said of Cruz.

  • Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis

How did SNL funnyman Jason Sudeikis win the heart of serious actress Olivia Wilde? He made himself a fascinating enigma. The two met at an SNL after-party in 2011. Shortly thereafter, they bumped into each other in New York City, and Sudeikis asked for Wilde's number. "He played it really cool," Wilde told Howard Stern in a recent interview. He didn't text me for a month!" And, naturally, once the witty banter commenced, they were both goners! "He just knew how to get me on the hook,” Wilde said of her fiancé.

  • Salma Hayek & Ed Norton

In 1999, after being set up by their chiropractor, Ed Norton and Mexican bombshell Salma Hayek started dating. Norton was at the top of his game, having earned critical and popular acclaim for his work in Primal Fear, American History X, and Fight Club, but he was also developing a reputation for being difficult to work with. For the four years during which Norton dated Hayek, however, he seemed like a smart, goofy, dedicated beau, even collaborating with her on 2002's Frida, the film that established her as a formidable talent who had way more to offer than good looks.

Jaws dropped when in March 2015, Sarah Paulson revealed she has been dating actress Holland Taylor for over a year. "I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor,” Paulson told the New York Times. While Paulson dated actress Cherry Jones from 2004 to 2011, their relationship was rarely discussed in the media, so many were surprised to hear she was bisexual. Others were puzzled by the ladies' 32-year age difference. Paulson, however, appreciates Taylor's wisdom. "There’s a poignancy to being with someone older," she said.

  • Heidi Klum & Seal

    Image via ©2010 Phil Ramey/RameyPix/Corbis

The news of Heidi Klum and Seal's impending divorce in 2012 shocked us all. After all, every aspect of their seven-year marriage seemed magical. "It was kind of like two magnets," the Project Runway judge said of meeting Seal during a 2010 CNN interview. Even Seal's proposal was befitting of a fairy tale: The singer whisked Klum away to an igloo built atop a mountain in the Canadian Rockies, serenading her before popping the question. They raised four children together and held over-the-top vow renewal ceremonies yearly. It all seemed perfect. But, as the old adage goes, appearances can be deceiving. Ultimately, they couldn't "make it work."
