Queen Elizabeth's True Feelings for Princess Diana Are Bittersweet at Best

After years and years of not-so-subtle disdain for Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth is apparently taking it all back -- according to members of her "inner circle," the queen expressed gratitude for all Diana did in her life, and said something along the lines of She's not so bad after all.

It probably sounded more stately when she said it, but the queen reportedly said she has a great deal to thank Diana for, including, presumably, her influence on Prince William and Prince Harry.

Back in the day, Queen Elizabeth was tough on Diana -- not only for not quite fitting in the with royals (the queen's word was "misfit"), but also for her work with AIDS outreach, which apparently wasn't a charity fit for royalty.

Obviously, to some extent, this is all conjecture -- Queen Elizabeth has always been private, and she's never been forward about her feelings. But she also never expressed much admiration, or -- God forbid -- love for Diana, so maybe there's something to it.

Either way, it seems to be a thing of the past: It's been almost 20 years since Princess Diana died, and somewhere in that time the queen's old heart softened toward the mother of her grandchildren. It's about time, don't you think?
