Mark Zuckerberg Urges Girls to Become Nerds -- Not Date Them

He recently welcomed a new baby daughter to the world, and now Mark Zuckerberg has some spot-on advice for other parents of girls. The Facebook mogul responded to a well-meaning comment on his page, and as a parent to two daughters, I'm giving him a round of applause.

On a post about his "personal challenge" for 2016 (building himself a home artificial intelligence system to help with chores and tasks, natch), a commenter posted that she encourages her granddaughters to "date the nerds" in school. You know, because he might turn out to be the next Mark Zuckerberg.

Instead of ignoring it, or making a winky face emoticon, the Facebook CEO casually responded, "Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor!"

Boom. And just like that, Mark scored one for STEM girls everywhere. Although the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is still largely dominated by men, more girls than ever are entering.

My own daughter's favorite subject right now is algebra, and her dream is to study medicine at Stanford. She's 12. It's a big dream, but she's not concerned with marrying the nerd -- she likes being smart and innovative. Her current goal is to develop vaccines that can be taken orally, because homegirl hates shots. In fact, one of her most favorite accomplishments is that she's able to name every bone in the human body -- a feat she accomplished two years ago.

She's a total smarty-pants, and she's awesome all on her own. Of course she has crushes, and wants to have a family someday, but it's not going to be dependent upon finding a nerd so she can cook his meals and pick up his dry cleaning.

She has her own dreams and ambitions on making it in the STEM world of nerds, and it's awesome to see icons like Mark Zuckerberg encouraging her.
