Royal Family's Christmas Gifts to Each Other Are Really Kind of Strange

When you're a member of the royal family, you already own incredible jewels, expensive cars, and actual palaces — you can imagine how difficult it would be to buy Christmas gifts for relatives who truly have everything at their fingertips. That explains why the royal family reportedly buy the cheapest, chintziest Christmas gifts they can find — the quirkier, the better.

Queen Elizabeth apparently started a tradition by which the royals agree to not exchange luxury items on Christmas, which is wise because I'm sure she realizes taxpayers would be a little annoyed knowing they helped fund Prince William's new electric blue Bentley or more diamonds for Kate. Princess Diana's former chef Darren McGrady told People magazine, "The crazier and the more quirky is what they love. It's not about something really amazing or a Cartier watch."

Apparently, poor Diana learned this the hard way when she gave everyone cashmere sweaters during one of her first Christmases with the royals and her gifts were met with disapproval — seriously, couldn't Prince Charles have clued her into this beforehand?

So just what can Kate, Will, and the others expect to receive on Christmas Eve at Sandringham?

More from The Stir: Kate Middleton Spotted Christmas Shopping for Some Very Expensive Gifts

Here are some of the strange gag gifts the royals exchanged in the past: an "Ain't life a bitch!" bath hat was given to the queen by Prince Harry. Princess Anne gifted Prince Charles with a white leather toilet seat. Kate once presented William with a beanie. And, best gift of all time: a grow-your-own-girlfriend kit given to Harry by Kate.

Material possessions don't matter as much when you can have and own anything you'd like — so these gag gifts are a fun way for the royals to let off a little steam, show their personalities, and reassure taxpayers they aren't squandering their money on expensive gifts.

Can't wait to see who gets a toilet cover at this year's festivities!
