It's a family's nightmare. Kristin Cavallari has confirmed that her older brother Michael is indeed missing. At the same time, though, she shared a heartfelt message via Instagram, showing that her family is nowhere near ready to give up hope.

No one has seen Kristin's big brother since the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 27. But, ominously, his car was found -- abandoned -- along a highway in Grand County, Utah. The area was searched, but so far, no sign of Michael has been found, and the Grand County Sherrif's Office says this being treated as an active missing persons investigation.

On Monday, Kristin posted this throwback photo of a little girl with her big brother...

"I appreciate all the concern, thoughts, and prayers that have been extended to me and my family," Kristin wrote along with the sweet photo. "We remain hopeful and I will share any news that we receive. I have such gratitude for all those that have shared their support."

My heart goes out to Kristin and her family. It's an awful, nightmarish place to be -- hoping for the best, while imagining the worst. That kind of photo, hearkening back to happier and carefree days .... well, Kristin doesn't even have to say much along with it. A photo like that makes your heart break with wishing you could magically step right into it. Magically change back the clock, wrap your arms around your loved one, and make sure that everything turns out okay.

Kristin and her husband, Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears, just had their third baby, and she must have been looking forward to a lovely holiday season with her new blessing. What an awful shock. I sure hope everything does turn out okay for the Cavallari family. And that they are able to keep their hearts full of hope.
