The 'Darkest Period' in Johnny Depp's Life Had to Do With His Daughter

johnny depp, amber heardSay what you will about Johnny Depp's increasingly eccentric behavior, but there's one thing that's remained a constant about the 52-year-old actor since he became a dad: Depp's kids are his number one priority. So it only makes sense that the "darkest period of his life" would have involved his daughter Lily-Rose's incredibly serious illness!

As Depp revealed to Graham Norton on Thursday, November 26, the most horrible thing he ever experienced was in 2007 when Lily-Rose (now 16, gorgeous and healthy) was hospitalized with kidney failure after contracting E. coli. Scary!

“When my daughter was ill in Great Ormond Street [hospital] it was the darkest period of my life,” he said.

No doubt! Depp has been gushing about his little girl since she was born, so he must have been absolutely beside himself with grief and fear to see Lily so ill. The star was so grateful and relieved following her recovery that he donated $2 million to the hospital where she was treated, and says that the act of visiting sick children in hospitals -- something he'd done for years -- took on a whole new meaning.

“I’d always done these visits but after that experience the visits became more and more important,” he said. “The kids are so courageous but to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to the parents means everything in the world to me.”
