Watch Will Smith Reveal How He & Jada Make a 'Difficult' Marriage Work (VIDEO)

Will and Jada Smith

When it comes to Hollywood marriages, this pair has defied the odds. But, though Will Smith's comments on marriage to Jada Pinket make it clear that they are in it for the long haul, I can't help but wonder if describing your marriage in the way he just did is the best way to ensure a happy life together.

While walking the red carpet for his new movie Concussion, Smith waxed philosophical on the importance of not quitting when it comes to marriage. He then described marriage as "most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives." Um ... alrighty then!

Then, he also added:

If there is a secret I would say is that we never went into working in our relationship. We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.

Watch for yourself:

So, marriage is "difficult"  and "grueling" but not something that you work on together? I'm all for working on your own issues but skipping working on the relationship? That is an interesting take, to say the least.

I give Will kudos for not pretending that marriage is always a walk in the park, but I have to say that I'd be pretty devastated to hear my husband describe our relationship as "excruciating." Those are some pretty strong words, especially coming from a couple whose marriage is already under constant scrutiny.

This pair has been married for almost 20 years, so they must be doing something right... right? The bottom line is that, of course, only Will and Jada know what works and doesn't for their marriage, "grueling" as it may be. (Ouch.)
