Queen Elizabeth II addressed the nation after Diana's tragic accident and spoke of Diana's legacy. "She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys."

Prince William gave a moving speech at an event for a charity Mother’s Day campaign. "Never being able to say the word 'Mummy' again in your life sounds like a small thing. However, for many, including me, it is now really just a word -- hollow and evoking only memories," said William. He then made an especially poignant admission: "I can therefore wholeheartedly relate to the Mother's Day campaign, as I too have felt and still feel the emptiness on such a day as Mother's Day."

Diana's Wish for Her Sons

In a 2007 interview with Matt Lauer, Harry and William were asked if they thought they were leading normal lives as Diana had wished. Harry replied: "I think she'd be happy in the way that we're going about it but slightly unhappy about the way the other people were going about it, as in saying, 'Look you're not normal so stop trying' to be normal,' which is very much what we get a lot." Hinting at the impact the loss of his mother had made on their lives, Harry continued, "Within our private life and within certain other parts of our life we want to be as normal as possible. And yes it's hard -- 'cause to a certain respect we never will be normal."

Harry then commented on how Diana would have felt about William's bride, saying, "She would have loved Kate."

William also confessed that the wedding was especially emotional without Diana there. "It's the one time since she's died where I've thought to myself, it would be fantastic if she was here. And just how sad really for her, more than anything, not being able to see it. Because I think she would have loved the day and I think hopefully she'd be very proud of us both for the day." William made another heartbreaking statement: "I'm just very sad that she's never going to get a chance to meet Kate."

At the memorial service honoring Diana on the tenth anniversary of her death, Harry delivered an emotional speech about the role she had in her son’s lives. "She was our guardian, friend and protector. She never once allowed her unfaltering love for us to go unspoken or undemonstrated. She will always be remembered for her amazing public work. But behind the media glare, to us, just two loving children, she was quite simply the best mother in the world."
