Gwen Stefani Just Realized That Her Marriage to Gavin Rossdale Was Actually Over Years Ago

Ever since rock-star couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale announced their divorce in August, we've been wondering what the heck went on between them. In a series of recent interviews, Stefani has revealed that the "sudden" split was actually a long time coming.

Blake Shelton's new girlfriend has been hitting the airwaves to promote her new single "Used to Love You," as well as her upcoming album in 2016, and she's been amazingly candid abut the breakdown of her marriage of 13 years with the Bush frontman.

As if the lyrics to the hit weren't telling enough ... "I thought you loved me best"? "I don't know why I used to love you"? Um, yeah.

Anyway, Gwen talked to KIIS FM's JoJo Wright this week, and said that while a divorce at this stage of her life was "unexpected," it isn't exactly what we think. For instance, the blowup that seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for the couple actually happened way back last February.

Talking about how "Used to Love You" came to be, she said that her life "blew up last February." She revealed, "I was going along thinking that was going to be the rest of my life and it's not. I don't know what happened."

She continued:

There was one night, the epicenter of the whole thing -- that's the most I can say about that -- and the next day I wrote the chorus to "Used to Love You," but I didn't know it was "Used to Love You." I just had written all this stuff and it had happened to be in there buried in a bunch of lyrics that I had written.

The songstress may be acting coy about what the big fight was actually about, but she said in another radio interview on Monday that things had actually been really rough for her for much longer than any of us knew about.

Stefani told Jesse Lozano on Star 94.1, "The last five years have been definitely a challenging time for me ... it was not good."

Five years? That seems like a long time to be feeling low in a marriage, but that seems to be the way it goes in divorce, whether you're famous or not. Things can seem just hunky-dory from the outside looking in, but you can't know what's really going on inside another person's relationship.

Sure, we were surprised by their seemingly out-of-the-blue announcement, but it makes sense that they were actually on the rocks for years.

Regardless of what exactly caused the breakdown, we're happy that Gwen seems to be in a much better place now, and thrilled that it inspired her to write a new album.
