Rebel Wilson Doesn't Want to Be Associated With the Kardashians for a Good Reason

rebel wilsonJust because Rebel Wilson is incredibly funny doesn't mean she wants to be the "butt" of any old joke -- particularly when it has to do with the Kardashians. During a recent spot on the Kyle and Jackie O radio show in Australia, the actress revealed that she was asked by MTV to present a VMA with Kendall and Kylie Jenner and refused -- partly because she was pretty sure they were going to make her dress up as Kim Kardashian.

"I got asked to present with Kendall and Kylie at the recent VMAs and said 'no,'" Wilson said, adding, "It’s not that you hate any of them individually, but it’s just that everything they stand for is against everything I stand for. And they’re not famous for talent. I worked really hard to get where I’ve gotten to."

When radio host Jackie questioned the seemingly "random" idea of MTV's wanting to pair Wilson with the Jenners in the first place, Wilson offered up her theory that she would probably be dressed as Kim if she did it.

Which, as we all know, means that the whole thing essentially would have gone down as one big elaborate fat joke: Haha, look at the chubby girl dressed as Kim Kardashian! And you thought her ass was big before, hahaha!

Nice one, MTV. I don't blame Wilson for refusing on those grounds alone, and I also understand her resistance to being put in the same category as a family of reality stars. Or as she put it, "Kim Kardashian got famous from the sex tape and I just went to acting school and worked really hard.”

Not that the MTV VMAs are really about artistic or professional achievements -- they're more about celebrity than anything else -- but this clearly would have been an exploitative pairing, and Wilson was smart (and shrewd) to recognize that. Not every famous person is famous for the same reasons, after all. And while celebrity culture shouldn't take itself too seriously, it's understandable that Wilson would want to keep her work as an actress separate from that as much as possible, even at an event like the VMAs. Plus, the Kardashians are all about achieving physical perfection, and Wilson is all about body positivity and acceptance for all shapes and sizes. Not that a five-minute appearance with Kendall and Kylie would have discredited all of that, but still.

MTV, what were you thinking??
