Leah Remini Says She Feels Connected to Katie Holmes After Leaving Scientology

We've speculated for a while about why she left, but Leah Remini recently confirmed it -- Katie Holmes had to leave Tom Cruise to protect Suri from Scientology. It's for that reason that Leah says she feels connected to the ex–Mrs. Cruise ... because she left the religion cult to save her own daughter too.

Leah made some pretty shocking claims about Katie and Tom in her upcoming memoir, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, including an incident where baby Suri was left alone to cry on a bathroom floor and nobody seemed bothered by it.

The King of Queens star opened up about Scientology on 20/20 over the weekend, and again on Good Morning America on Monday. She said, "I know now [Holmes] did what she did, leaving [Scientology] the way that she did, because she had to protect her daughter, which, in a way, connects us now."

After the 20/20 interview, Holmes released a statement via a rep, saying, "I regret having upset Leah in the past, and wish her only the best in the future."

Remini said she was "touched" by the gesture, and feels like they're connected by being former members who chose their children over the church. "It's really because we both left that we're able to have this kind of grace towards each other," she said. "Because we're back to being human."

More from The Stir: Leah Remini Reveals the Hardest Part of Leaving Scientology

She opened up about why she left the church for her daughter, since her daughter would be forced to not speak with her mom, as Leah is a "Suppressed Person." See why I call it a cult? A church that makes you choose between it and your own mom isn't a church at all.

I'm glad that whatever feud that happened between Leah and Katie seems to be over for good. As former Scientologists, they've gone through stuff that most of us can't even imagine. Leaving an extremist religious group isn't for the faint of heart -- it's nice to know others have survived and gone on with life.
