'Who's the Boss?' Star Danny Pintauro Reveals HIV Positive Status to Oprah Winfrey (VIDEO)

danny pintauroIf you were a kid in the '80s like me, chances are you spent a lot of time (too much time?) watching Who's the Boss?. And if that's the case, you'll be just as sad as I was to hear that star Danny Pintauro, who played Jonathan, was diagnosed with HIV -- 12 years ago!

Pintauro made the shocking revelation during an interview with Oprah Winfrey on the Saturday, September 26, episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now?. As the now 39-year-old actor explained:

"I wanted to tell you this a long time ago, but I wasn't ready -- I'm ready now -- that I'm HIV positive, and I have been for 12 years. It's just a big deal. It's not something that people are talking about right now really."

Wow. I can't imagine what it must have felt like for Pintauro to finally tell his secret -- and after already opening up to Oprah about his past crystal meth use and being forced to come out as gay by the National Enquirer in 1997! Whew. It's heartbreaking to consider what a hard time the actor had after spending his childhood starring in a hugely successful sitcom (as seems to be the case with so many who spend their childhoods starring in hugely successful sitcoms). But to hear Pintauro tell it, his diagnosis almost came as something of a relief:

"It's backwards. You've spent so much time terrified that you're going to get it, and then you have it. You don't have to be terrified anymore."

And now that he's had time to come to terms with his reality and make a stable, healthy life for himself, Pintauro says he wants to devote his time to becoming an activist for the LGBT community -- especially because, as he says, he feels like he "missed the opportunity to be a beacon of light for gay kids who were going through what I was going through because I was outed."

Good for him! And he means it: While the interview was airing, Pintauro posted a pic of himself with husband Wil Tabares with the following caption:

"Last meal as a nobody. ;) first meal as an activist. #lifelovelive."

Awww, you were never a nobody, Danny! Check out a clip from his talk with Oprah here:

Best of luck to you, Danny! So glad you're in a good place, and so inspired to know that you'll be helping others on their journeys, too.
