Bale went into full-on pig-out mode to prep for his role as a '70s con artist in 2013's American Hustle. He gained -- gulp! -- 43 pounds by eating "lots of doughnuts, a whole lot of cheeseburgers, and whatever I could get my hands on," he has said. The actor also chopped his locks and glued on a cheap toupee.

Bale's rumored bad-boy antics behind the scenes haven't dampened his sex symbol status. The talented actor has played everything from starving factory worker to strapping Batman, and looked good doing it.

  • Tyler Perry in 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman'

Perry's built a media empire around his over-the-top character, Medea, and he isn't afraid to don pantyhose, faux wrinkles, and a wig to play her. Since 2005's Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Perry has suited up as the sharp-witted, gun-toting grandma multiple times.

Perry's intelligence and good looks have helped the quadruple threat become a media mogul with his Madea movies, not to mention other big box office hits including 2011's For Better or For Worse. He also created a series of soap operas for the Own network and he's been featured on People's "50 Most Beautiful People" list.

Franco really sank his teeth -- and fake grill -- into his 2013's Spring Breakers role. In addition to a gold-filled mouth, the actor sported corn rows and countless tattoos to convincingly portray slimy Alien, a drug and arms dealer.

With his James Dean looks, the actor has modeled for Gucci as the face of its 2008 cologne campaign. Franco is more than just a pretty face, however. The multi-talented star also writes, produces, and directs.

  • Ryan Gosling in 'Blue Valentine'

Gosling starts 2010's Blue Valentine as the handsome star we know and love and ends the film as a stressed, balding, overweight shadow of his former self. The actor took a month off mid-filming to perfect the transformation, packing on a paunch, barely sleeping, and having his hairline manually receded. Ouch!

Thankfully Gosling's terrible transformation was only temporary. The smoking hot Canadian actor, named one of People's 50 Hottest Bachelors in 2004, is still as good looking as ever -- in real life and in countless internet memes. Rumor has it Gosling has turned down the title of World's Sexiest Man several times.

Cruise was almost unrecognizable as the balding, hairy-chested, profanity-laden Hollywood mogul Les Grossman in 2008's Tropic Thunder. He wore silicone prosthetics for his head, neck, chest, and hands, and donned a fat suit from his ankles to his neck. The off-color role earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination.

Cruise is the definition of movie-star good looks -- People has named him one of the world's 50 most beautiful people three times. Going ugly in Tropic Thunder, ironically, helped him regain some of his longtime Hollywood hunk status. The golden boy's reputation had taken a hit in the years prior when he jumped on Oprah's couch and criticized Brooke Shields for taking postpartum depression meds.
