13 Celebrity Couples Who Called Off Their Engagement & Never Made It to the Altar (PHOTOS)

Talk about disengagement! For a while they seemed so happy together, smiling for cameras, showing off dazzling diamond rings, and planning the perfect star-studded nuptials. But even the best laid wedding plans come to a screeching halt when a celebrity couple gets cold feet just weeks or even days before their big day. 

Several Hollywood stars, supermodels, and A-listers have been left practically standing at the altar. Take a look at these runaway brides and grooms who called off their engagements. Which ones surprised you, and which ones did you see coming?

  • Julia Roberts & Kiefer Sutherland

    Eight years before starring in Runaway Bride, Roberts fled her own wedding to Flatliners costar Kiefer Sutherland. She bolted three days before the elaborate 1991 nuptials at 20th Century Fox’s Soundstage 14. While A-listers scratched the event off their schedules and bakery employees ate the wedding cake, Roberts was seen with Sutherland’s best friend, Jason Patric, on the day of the planned ceremony. Hmmm...

     

  • Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck

    J-Lo sported a 6.1-carat pink sparkler within a year of meeting Affleck on the set of Jersey Girl. Bennifer started dating in 2002, were engaged by the end of the year, but called off their September 2003 wedding just days before the event, citing too much negative publicity. They officially split in January 2004, the same year Lopez married singer Marc Anthony. Affleck wed a pregnant Jennifer Garner in 2005.

  • Brad Pitt & Gwyneth Paltrow

    The Seven costars dated for two years and were reportedly ready to marry in the Hamptons during the summer of 1997. Paltrow later said that at 24, she was too young, and Pitt "was too good for me." Their romance ended in June, 1997.

  • Hugh Hefner & Crystal Harris

    The December 2009 Playboy Playmate of the Month called off her June 18, 2011, wedding to the Playboy founder just five days before she was to walk down the aisle. They reconciled and wed on Dec. 31, 2012. She is the third Mrs. Hefner.

  • Maksim Chmerkovskiy & Karina Smirnoff

    The stars seemed to align for the Dancing with the Stars pros who were engaged within six months of their first date in 2008. But star-crossed lovers are forever doomed, and the dancers called it quits in 2009, ending their plans for a summer wedding.

  • Johnny Depp & Winona Ryder

    Depp not only put a ring on it, he tattooed “Winona Forever” on his bicep during the couple’s courtship. The Edward Scissorhands duo known for their penchant for PDA never made it to the altar, and Depp eventually altered the tat to “Wino Forever.”

  • Heather Locklear & Jack Wagner

    Our favorite Melrose Place lovers began their true romance in 2007 after Locklear’s split from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. Engaged in April 2011, the couple eventually called it quits, saying planning the wedding was taking time away from their children.

  • Tara Reid & Carson Daly

    Reid and the Late Call with Carson Daly host dated for two years before becoming engaged in 2000. The actress split with Daly in July, 2001, even though their later-that-summer wedding was already planned.

  • Tara Reid & Michael Axtmann

    The American Pie actress also axed plans to marry entrepreneur Michael Axtmann the month before the couple’s intimate May 22, 2010, ceremony. A year later, People magazine reported Reid married Danish businessman Michael Lillelund but Reid declared she’d wed someone entirely different (Bulgarian financier Zachary Kehayov). She debunked the myth two months later, leaving fans scratching their heads in confusion. Currently Reid is not engaged nor married – that we know of.

    J-Love had the dress and a location for her spring 2009 destination wedding to the Scottish actor whom she met during his 2005 appearance on Ghost Whisperer. But she called off the engagement in late 2008. In 2013 she married The Client List co-star Brian Hallisay.

    The New York Rangers forward walked out on his model fiancé just seven weeks before their August 2009 wedding, emailing stunned guests to let them know the nuptials were off. The then-40-year-old bride-to-be was equally shocked by the slap shot from her 27-year-old intended.

  • Demi Moore & Emilio Estevez

    One of the forgotten romances of the 1980s Brat Pack era, Demi and Emilio had a date set but called off their Dec. 13, 1986, ceremony, announcing they would remain “just friends.” Moore married Bruce Willis the next year.

    The international supermodel moved from dating Johnny Depp to Pete Doherty after meeting the English musician, songwriter, actor, poet, writer and artist (phew, what doesn’t he do?) on her 31st birthday. It seemed the on-again, off-again relationship was finally cemented when Doherty referred to Moss as his fiancé in 2007. The couple was to marry that summer, but their relationship ended before the walk down the aisle.
