Jessa Duggar's Post on Affair-Proofing Your Marriage Is a Little Self-Righteous

If there's one thing the Josh Duggar cheating scandal has taught us, it's that anyone can make bad decisions. Which is why his sister should be careful of being too up on her high horse. Jessa Seewald posted a message about resisting the temptation to cheat, and we can't help but look at it as a jab to her brother on not walking the straight and narrow.

Josh admitted earlier this month to being addicted to porn, and to cheating on his wife, Anna, after the Ashley Madison hack revealed that he had two separate accounts. He's currently undergoing treatment at a long-term therapy facility. Anna hasn't made any sort of statement on her husband and the father of her four children, and it's unclear if she will ultimately stay with him of not.

The thing that makes this scenario even tougher to deal with is the fact that on the surface, Josh Duggar was the quintessential conservative family man, claiming to stand for Christian values. He was a lobbyist for the Family Research Council in Washington, DC, for Pete's sake!

Which is why Jessa should think twice before posting messages about how to essentially affair-proof your marriage.

The 19 Kids and Counting star took to Instagram to share a sermon called "The Passions That Prevent Adultery" from famous theologian John Piper.

"In three minutes, John Piper explains how God cures our heart’s broken desires for sin," Duggar, 22, caption the screenshot from Piper's website. She also shared the video on her Facebook page, adding:

When the Bible calls us to live like Christ, it doesn't merely give us a set of commands. It presents us with something compelling and captivating that changes our minds, and then our hearts. The gospel convinces us of something irresistibly true, and then transforms our desires for something new. That conviction and passion keeps us out of bed with someone who's not our spouse and rejects a thousand other temptations.

Piper's message is based in 1 Peter 1:13-16, and the pastor preaches, "Ninety-nine percent of what you do is out of the abundance of the heart ... The mouth speaks, the arms move, and you live ... As obedient children, that's what we want to be, children of God, we should not be formed ... conformed ... conFORMED by passions that are rooted in ignorance."

I tend to be a fan of John Piper's, and I don't think he's wrong here about where the desire to cheat comes from. It just seems a little uppity coming from Josh's little sister, who has not been married a year yet, and is just expecting her first child.

It might be wise for her to show a little more compassion ... lest she find herself in Anna's position down the road. It doesn't matter how great a wife she is, or how faithful Ben seems to her -- Anna was those things too. And look what happened to her, through no fault of her own.

So maybe taking the preachy angle on how to affair-proof your marriage isn't exactly the direction she should be going right now. After all, but by the grace of God, there go I.
