21 Female Hollywood Stars Who Married Regular People (PHOTOS)

When you're a megawatt star of the screen or stage, having a spouse who doesn't need to be in the spotlight -- and can handle being called, say, Mr. Julia Roberts -- can be a definite plus. It can also mean a low-key marriage with less glare from the media as well as an in-home reality check.

Here are 21 ladies of the limelight who said "I do" to mates without household names and have lived happily ever since.

  • Scarlett Johansson & Romain Dauriac

    1

You know it's love when you don't even remember there being a language barrier when you met. Johansson married French-born Romain Douriac, founder of a creative agency, in 2014 and the two have a daughter.

  • Alison Sweeney & David Sanov

    2

By the time the Biggest Loser host got married at 23, she was already a TV veteran, having been on Days of our Lives since she was 16 (she retired in 2014 after 21 years on the soap). The other constant in her life has been her husband, childhood friend and California Highway Patrol investigator David Sanov, whom she married in 2000, and with whom she has two children. Their wedding anniversary tradition: Give each other job evaluations.

  • Tina Fey & Jeff Richmond

    3

She may be taller than him, but Fey and her composer husband, Jeff Richmond, seem to be a perfect match. They met at the comedy outfit Second City, and dated for seven years before walking down the aisle in a traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony in 2001. He says he fell for her biting wit, she says she was just happy to get a date. "He saw a diamond in the rough and he took me in." Clearly, humor is a big part of their bond.

  • Alyssa Milano & David Bugliari

    4

For the Charmed star, the agreement she has with her agent husband to live outside Los Angeles is a huge part of the reason they're so happy. To them, their professions are just a way to make a living, not who they are. "I think nice guys are all around," she says. "Sometimes, they're not the more famous people. Just look for a guy who has a real job."

  • Drew Barrymore & Will Kopelman

    5

As Hollywood's ultimate boho chick and reformed party animal, you can see why Barrymore fell for Wil Kopelman, a laid-back art consultant. But the couple, who married in 2012, also have another thing in common: A love of food, which Barrymore joked kept her from immediately shedding all the baby weight from two pregnancies.

  • Meryl Streep & Don Gummer

    6

Of course she'd be the rare actress with a long-lasting marriage. Is there anything Streep doesn't excel at? She and her sculptor husband, Don Gummer, have been married since 1978, a remarkable feat considering the marriage produced four kids and Streep has never stopped working. No wonder she thanked him in her 2012 Oscar acceptance speech by saying, "Everything I value most in our lives you’ve given me."

  • Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth

    7

As an entertainment agent, Jim Toth is used to supporting big stars. So it's perhaps no surprise that when Wild star Reese Witherspoon sings his praises, it's about his being her number one fan, making car pool runs, changing diapers, and making a mean latte. Take that, divorce rumors!

  • Anne Hathaway & Adam Schulman

    8

The apparent polar opposite of her dashing but crooked ex, businessman Raffaello Follieri, who went to jail for money laundering, Schulman is a jeweler (and fledgling actor). They met just eight months after her previous relationship imploded. "Adam totally ruined my plan," she said. "I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time and then I fell in love like a fool!" They married in 2012.

  • Julia Roberts & Danny Moder

    9

What's the love life of a superstar without a little controversy? Roberts and cameraman Danny Moder fell in love while filming The Mexican, when he was still a married man. After his first wife reluctantly gave him a divorce, the pair wed in 2002. The marriage seemed to be the kind she needed. Roberts and previous boyfriend, actor Benjamin Bratt, had broken up partly because her uberfame was, as he once put it, "a mosquito buzzing in one's ear."

  • Jenna Fischer & Lee Kirk

    10

Neither was looking for a relationship, but Fischer and screenwriter Lee Kirk, who had just left a long-term relationship, fell in love anyway while working together on a movie. The newly divorced actress says she heeded a friend's advice on looking beyond "fluttery" feelings of love when searching for a life-long mate, and instead focused on similar goals. She and Kirk clearly were on the same page, marrying in 2010. They have two kids.

  • Julianna Margulies & Keith Lieberthal

    11

It all started with a "Happy Birthday" text message. Julianna Margulies sent one to an agent she'd passed on months earlier, and he invited her to a dinner party that night. There, she met Keith Liberthal, whom she almost wrote off because she figured a guy so hot must be an actor, and she was done dating actors. Nope. He was a whip-smart Wall Street litigator -- and Jewish (like Margulies). They married in 2007 and have been going strong ever since.

  • Julie Bowen & Scott Phillips

    12

The Modern Family actress is grateful for her husband, software developer Scott Phillips. Really grateful. "I would have had a bullet in my head so long ago if I was married to me!" she has said. "He is so patient, and takes care of me like nobody's business." The couple, who married in 2004, have three kids together.

  • Marcia Cross & Tom Mahoney

    13

It was a textbook "meet cute" straight out of a romantic comedy, except it involved only one actor: Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross met her laywer husband Tom Mahoney in a flower shop. When hubby Mahoney was diagnosed with prostate cancer just four years after they married in 2006, she wondered if her bliss would be short-lived. They stayed strong, though, and he overcame the disease, making a full recovery.

  • Lisa Kudrow & Michael Stern

    14

Playing the waiting game is one of the toughest things to do when it comes to love, but Kudrow did just that after meeting French advertising executive Michael Stern -- because he was dating her roommate! When the pair ran into each other again six years later, they never separated again. They married in 1995 and have a son.

  • Stacy Kiebler & Jared Pobre

    15

They're the king and queen of PDA and they don't care! Papparazzi photographers have caught the couple in the midst of a passionate kiss many a time, and it's no wonder. After a long friendship, the two (Pobre owns an online ad company) were together for just six months before saying 'I do' in 2014, just a year after her breakup with George Clooney. They also have a daughter.

  • Wanda Sykes & Alex Niedbalski

    16

The details of how Wanda Sykes met her wife, Alex (née Niedbalski), a French businesswoman, is the stuff of movies: While on a ferry to Fire Island, New York, she spotted a beautiful woman with a child and told herself, "This is what my life needs right now" but walked away without approaching. Sykes was later introduced to her by a friend of a friend she met at a party. The couple, who married in 2008, are moms to twins, a boy and a girl.

  • Dania Ramirez & Bev Land

    17

The Devious Maids star says there's a good reason she and Bev Land, whose family founded Aflac insurance, fell in love: They'd been together many times in past lives, according to Ramirez. "I'm just glad we finally found each other in this one," she says. The couple married in 2013 and have twins, a boy and a girl.

  • Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

    18

The Sex & the City star had always dated men -- then she met Christine Marinoni, an education activist whom she famously described as, "basically a short man with boobs." A few years after meeting Marinoni, she separated from her longtime male partner and the two women began a relationship that moved on to marriage in 2012. They have a son together.

  • Chely Wright & Lauren Blitzer

    19

The country singer's life changed drastically when she became the first in her music genre to come out as gay. Two weeks later, she met LGBT activist Lauren Blitzer through her youth advocacy work, and just a year later, in 2011, the two married. The ladies, who joke that their love of Scrabble keeps them together, have twin sons.

  • Vanessa Williams & Jim Skrip

    20

For her third trip to the altar, the actress chose a regular guy -- a businessman from Buffalo, New York, no less -- whom she met while on vacation in 2013. Of looking beyond Hollywood for a mate, Williams said, "He's a real man. You want somebody in your life who has integrity, who is solid, who knows who he is, who is romantic."

  • Ana Ortiz & Noah Lebenzon

    21

It wasn't quite a blind date, but Devious Maids' Ortiz and musician husband Noah Lebenzon were definitely set up. They thought they were meeting up with a group of friends, but when the two showed up to the agreed location, it was just the two of them. They married three years later, in 2007, and have two kids.
