Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt Are an Unhappy Couple (In Their New Film)

angelina jolie, brad pittWhen it comes to Hollywood unions, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have one of the strongest marriages around (especially this week!). But the "heavy" nature of their latest joint project saw the couple fighting like cats and dogs -- on their honeymoon, no less!

Indeed, Jolie says friends told her she and Brad were "crazy" to film By the Sea (which Jolie wrote and directed) while on their honeymoon in France. After all, the movie is "about a deeply unhappy couple on vacation in France who becomes involved with a pair of newlyweds staying at their seaside inn," with Jolie and Pitt playing the "deeply unhappy couple," not the newlyweds (even though they were newlyweds at the time!). And being that Jolie and Pitt are masters of their craft, they dug deep into their own down and dirty emotions for a truly authentic result -- even if it did freak out everybody else on set.

"I'd be directing myself and him in a scene where we're having a fight, and I'd be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you're frustrated with each other," says Jolie.

"It was very heavy," she adds. "We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don't know where to stand or where to look."

Awkward!! But I have no doubt their efforts paid off -- I mean, they are both really good actors, and the movie itself sounds pretty interesting. Jolie calls it "an art film, the kind of movie that I like to see but not something I'm usually cast in."

"We're proud of ourselves for being brave enough to try it," she said. "I think By the Sea was the hardest film for me because it wasn't [issue-driven]. It's something I probably won't do very much of."

Oh, but maybe she should! Not that I don't love seeing these two in mega-blockbusters, but a little indie cred ain't such a bad thing. Either way, this experience stands as a testament to the strength of their bond as a couple: Not many marrieds (celeb or non) can go to such dark places with each other and come back unscathed, but these two pulled it off. And personally, I can't wait to see them faux-fight!
