Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale File for Divorce After 13 Years of Marriage

gavin rossdale, gwen stefaniWell, it's official: Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are getting a divorce after 13 years of marriage. Stefani filed the paperwork this week, citing irreconcilable differences. Don't speak, we know just what you're thinking ... the music is over!

Of all the celebs we've been expecting to get a divorce, these two were pretty low on the list -- so the announcement feels like something of a shock. After all, the couple recently had a new baby (son Apollo, 17 months), and everybody talks about what doting parents they are to Apollo and his big brothers, Kingston, 9, and Zuma, 6. But apparently things have been pretty rocky for a while, with an insider telling Us Weekly that the breakup "was a long time coming."

"It only looks sudden, but everything was worked out months ago so paperwork could be filed and the marriage could be ended quickly and easily," said the source.

Jeez, that's depressing. So they've been unhappy for a long time! Even since before Apollo's birth, if the source is to be believed:

"Things were rocky before then but they tried to make the marriage work. But it just couldn’t. A lot of the feeling was gone."

More from The Stir: Gavin Rossdale Reveals Why His Marriage With Gwen Stefani Works

Of course there have been rumors throughout the couple's marriage of infidelity (most notably, Courtney Love's claim that she slept with Rossdale while he was dating Stefani), but by and large, Stefani and Rossdale have seemed like a fairly happy pair. So what finally happened?! We may never know. But at least there appear to be enough good feelings left between them for an amicable split. In their statement, they made a point of focusing on their shared goal of shielding the kids from any fallout, saying:

"While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment. To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

The couple had no prenup, interestingly, and since they live in California, that means their (considerable) assets will likely be split down the middle; they're also seeking joint custody.

Here's hoping Stefani and Rossdale can make co-parenting work -- even if they couldn't make their marriage last forever. And now, a pic of the family in happier times to make us feel better:
