Joe Morton Slips Into 'Scandal' Character Eli Pope to Take on Confederate Flag (VIDEO)

Ever since some deranged lunatic with a fondness for the Confederate flag shot nine black people in a church in Charleston earlier this month in an attempt to start a "race war," the Rebel flag has been back in the news. While appearing on The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore recently, Scandal's Joe Morton got into character to give his take on the controversy.

If you've ever watched the show, you know that Eli Pope is hella scary as the head of B613, and is known for giving impassioned and terrifying speeches to people who think they know what they're talking about. Papa Pope always knows best though -- don't even dare cross him.

He stays so perfectly in his Scandal character that you can't help but laugh, even when he sounds as intimidating as all get-out. Plus he manages to quote "Summertime," which, let's face it, is just plain awesome.

"You are some funny, funny people. For you it's always summertime and the living is easy," he said, quoting the song. "Your daddy's rich and your momma's good looking. You're a Confederate, a proud Southern white boy with a Bible in your hand and a shotgun in your pickup truck. A southern white boy with the shame of slavery running through your veins. You are a bigot."

He continued, "I am a black man. I have worked and scraped for every inch of dirt I walk on ... You cried yourself to sleep because Lincoln hurt your feelings."

It just gets better from there!

While this is a funny take on it, it's a serious issue being debated in the South Carolina legislature. Governor Nikki Haley called for the Confederate flag to be removed from the state capitol this week, saying, "Today we are here in a moment of unity in our state without ill will to say it is time to remove the flag from our capitol grounds ... We are not going to allow this symbol to divide us any longer."

She added: "This flag, while an integral part of our past, does not represent the future of our great state."

Do you think the Confederate flag should be taken down?
