Leah Remini Reveals the Moment as a Mom When She Decided to Quit Scientology

leah reminiWhat was the wake-up call that pushed Leah Remini to leave Scientology? According to the actress, it was a quiet moment. As Remini tells it on Oprah: Where Are They Now? she was watching her daughter swim when she had that moment of clarity.

Remini was raised in Scientology. Her mother was a member the entire time she was growing up, and it was all she knew. Even so, Remini noticed the sacrifices her mother made to participate. "I mean, it was every day, three-and-a-half hours minimum, seven days a week," she says. That meant very little time with her own mother.

Years later, as a mother herself, Remini realized she was repeating the same experience for her own daughter. When she wasn't working, she was at church. "So, minimal time is really spent with your family," she admits. But then one day while she was reading her Scientology "betterment" coursework she realized what she was missing.

I was at one of these hotels in Florida, and I saw my daughter swimming for the first time, while I'm... reading this thing. A tear came down my face. I was like, 'What am I doing?' The moment hit me that I was now doing the same thing to my daughter that my mother [had conveyed] to me, that what she was doing was more important.

That was when Remini began questioning her dedication to Scientology. She knew she was giving up too much for it. She and her family left in 2013.

I find it amazing that someone raised in a cult could have the strength to change their perspective and see their situation with greater clarity. It really speaks to Remini's strength of spirit, and her feelings as a mother. Maybe that's what it takes? When our own closest relationships are threatened, when we sense that we're unable to do our best in our most important life mission (parenting in Remini's case), that can cause a major crisis. And crisis can lead to great positive change.

It's even more amazing that Remini has been so vocal about leaving Scientology. But she knows what's at stake. Other families are suffering the way hers was. And she knows what's possible when you walk away from a cult and draw your family closer together.
