Melissa Rivers Defends Her Mom With Some Harsh Words for Kathy Griffin

No doubt that Melissa Rivers misses her mom Joan Rivers very much. She died just last September at the age of 81, but it was from an unexpected complication from a surgery, so I'm sure Melissa still thought they had years together.

In the wake of her grief, she's not going to take anyone desecrating her mom's memory, including Kathy Griffin, who took Joan's spot on Fashion Police, only to quit months later. Melissa had some very harsh words for Kathy on the Today show on Wednesday, May 13.

The Book of Joan author was chatting with Hoda Kotb in New York City when she let it be known that she didn't like the way that Griffin left the show back in March.

"It wasn't a match on a lot of levels," she said, jokingly asking if the cameras were still on. She apparently didn't mind though, because then she threw some serious shade at Griffin.

After replacing Joan on Fashion Police, the My Life on the D-List star quit soon after, after the controversy surrounding co-host Giuliana Rancic and her commentary on Zendaya's dreadlocks at the Oscars.

"My biggest complaint was the feeling that she kind of s--t all over my mother's legacy in her statement on leaving," Melissa told Kotb. "And I know that that was not an intentional reading of it, but that's how I felt...That was my takeaway, by [her] calling the comedy and the style of it old-fashioned. It's like, I understand what you're doing, you're trying to save yourself, but don't crap all over my mother to do it."

She continued, "That was very personal. But as a professional, that was her choice, that's what she did. No harm, no foul, moving on."

In Griffin's statement at the time of her resignation, she said that she believed the show contributed "to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference."

Joan thinks that id her mom were still alive, the whole Zendaya thing wouldn't have gotten so blown up. Melissa told Kotb, "If something like that had happened and my mother had been alive, her reaction immediately would have been, 'Oh, please, all this over a wig?' Literally, it was a wig! Let's just all relax."

She went on, "[Joan] would have called Giuliana and yelled at Giuliana, she would have called Kelly [Osbourne] and yelled at Kelly, and said 'Stop it.' She would have listened to them both cry and complain about each other. And she'd be like, 'Okay, is everyone over it? Let's go to work and make a funny show.'"

Rest in peace, Joan. Your daughter certainly has your back.

What do you think about Melissa's remarks toward Kathy Griffin?
