Cate Blanchett Admits to Not Putting a Label on Her Gender Relationships

These days (thankfully) it doesn't seem to be a big deal to come out in Hollywood. But occasionally, an A-list star will take us off guard by admitting to romantic relationships with the same sex. Cate Blanchett is the latest actress to admitt to not liking labels on her sexual relationships

The two-time Oscar winner was talking to Variety recently about her role as a lesbian in Todd Haynes' Carol, which is set in the 1950s. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt, and when asked if this was her first time playing homosexual character, Blanchett replied, "On film -- or in real life?"

Say what to the what? This isn't exactly something we'd expect to hear from a high-level actress, especially one who has been married for 18 years to Andrew Upton, and has four children with him.

But the Australian actress didn't hesitate to answer the question asking if she had ever participated in same-sex, real-life relationships. She reportedly answered, "Yes. Many times."

Even so, Blanchett said she didn't want to make rules for her character Carol, who falls in love with a younger department store clerk in New York City, played by Rooney Mara.

"I never thought about it," she admitted, speaking about her character. "I don't think Carol thought about it."

Carol apparently never exactly "comes out" in the movie, but Blanchett told the magazine, "Her sexuality isn't politicized ... I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don't feel the need to shout things from the rafters."

You know what? Even though I'm surprised to hear Cate Blanchett admit that she's had relationships with females in the past, I'm glad that she can be true and honest to herself and her past. And I like that she made a point to say that sexuality shouldn't be politicized. It is what it is, and the best thing we can do is respect each other.

Are you surprised to hear Cate Blanchett's revelations?
