Scarlett Johansson Hopes Revealing Her Childhood Secret Inspires Us All to Stop Hunger in America (VIDEO)

Scarlett Johansson isn’t afraid to open up about her past if it can help put food on the table of a hungry child.  In a new PSA for Feeding America, the bombshell actress admitted that she was once a recipient of assisted lunch programs.

In the 30-second promotion, Johansson reveals, "My family grew up relying on public assistance to help provide meals for our family. Child hunger in America is a real and often overlooked problem, but one that together, we can fix. It is my hope that by joining with Feeding America, our awareness of this issue will lead to a solution."

In a second ad, Johansson points out,  "There are 16 million children struggling with hunger in America ... This is a serious problem, but one we can solve."

She feels so strongly about solving childhood hunger that she not only made two PSAs for feeding America, she opened up about having to use public assistance as a kid, something a lot of kids feel pretty embarrassed about.

Her Avengers: Age of Ultron costar Jeremy Renner also filmed two PSAs, and spoke just as passionately as Johansson about Feeding America. And you know what? This is one celeb cause I can totally get behind.

I’ve volunteered with Feeding America in the past, and they’ve been fantastic to work with. They coordinate with grocery stores and other food stores to take edible, healthy foods that they wouldn’t be able to sell, and make sure that it gets to food banks, instead of ending up in the trash.

Like Johansson points out in the video, it just doesn't make sense that food would go in the trash when there are hungry kids and families in need. Feeding America is great organization, and a great reminder that we can help take care of each other.

Are you surprised that Scarlett Johansson once received welfare?
