Native American Actors Walk Off Set of Adam Sandler Western Citing Racism, But They're Not Getting the 'Joke'

Adam Sandler isn't known as the most politically correct comedian in the world, but he may have gone too far when several Native Americans walked off the set of his new Netflix movie The Ridiculous Six. Sources say that the Apaches were furious over dumb stereotypes of Native Americans that were depicted in the film.

Reportedly, the film disrepected the Apache actors by having characters with names like "Beaver Breath" and "No Bra" and depicting a Native American woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe.

One of the actors, Loren Anthony, told Indian Country Today:

I was asked a long time ago to do some work on this and I wasn't down for it. Then they told me it was going to be a comedy, but it would not be racist. So I agreed to it but on Monday things started getting weird on the set ... One thing that really offended a lot of people was that there was a female character called Beaver’s Breath. One character says 'Hey, Beaver's Breath.' And the Native woman says, ‘How did you know my name?

Okay, that sounds pretty insensitive until you hear Netflix's response. The company says that the movie is supposed to be insensitive, since it's a parody of those silly Westerns where Native Americans really did have names like "Beaver Breath."

Netflix could just be trying to save its own air-dried horsehide, who knows. But if the movie really is a parody in the mold of Airplane or Dumb & Dumber, then it's making fun of itself.

Still ... you can see why minority groups, be it Native Americans, African Americans, Asians or women, are fed up. For eons, they were the butt of jokes with impunity. They're mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

But there is a difference between satire and racist comedy that uses stupid stereotypical "jokes." If Sandler's film really is just pointing up how insensitve those old Westerns were, isn't that a good thing?

Is it good that comedians can't make jokes about certain groups anymore or have we all gotten too sensitive?
