'Avengers' Castmates Call Scarlett Johansson's 'Black Widow' a Slut & Make Lame Apology (VIDEO)

Ah, boys will be boys and make slut jokes about one of the few female characters in a comic book movie. Wait, what?! After Chris Evans (who is 33 and no longer a boy) and his Avengers 2: Age of Ultron costar Jeremy Renner (age 44 and hasn't seen boyhood in 25 years) "joked" during a press tour interview that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow character is a "slut" and a "whore" who would gladly have sex with both of their characters, they had a lot of explaining to do.

The reporter, who could have fired off one of many great questions, chose instead to ask Evans, who plays Captain America, and Renner, who took on Hawkeye, whether fans can expect to see Black Widow hook up with either of their characters. Because we always ask Batman and Superman about their sex lives, right?

"She's a slut," Renner answered. Evans began laughing at then added, "I was going to say something along that line ... a complete whore."

Because that wasn't enough, Renner then added, "She has a prosthetic leg anyway."

Huh?! We don't even have time to dive deep into the prosthetic leg remark, but yeah, totally dumb thing to say.

Evans and Renner eventually apologized for their bout of verbal diarrhea, but did so in a very sorrynotsorry way. Well, I'll give Evans some credit for his statement, which seemed sincere:

Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.

Renner's response seems a tad bit more defensive, if you ask me:

I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.

Instead of blaming your "exhausting" press tour (cry me a river), blame the fact that our society continues to give you permission to use words like "slut" and "whore" to describe female characters and that you can then excuse your behavior by saying you were "joking" all along.

I realize it's silly to make such a fuss about a character that doesn't exist, but I don't think that's really the point. It's difficult enough for women to be taken seriously in Hollywood and, given the influence comic book films like this one have these days, it would be really nice if male actors would support their female colleagues instead of turning them into a joke.

A strong female character who stands out in a mostly all-male ensemble deserves to be seen as more than just a sexy object who lives to serve men. Instead of setting young boys back 50 years, actors like Evans and Renner should set an example for all of their male fans—words like "slut" and "whore" are lazy and have no place in modern discussions about women, whether they're real or fictional.

Here's the video of Evans and Renner acting totally inappropriate:

Do you think Evans and Renner should have apologized or are people making too big a deal out of this?
