Ricky Gervais Bashes Hunter for Posing With Dead Giraffe (PHOTOS)

Comedian Ricky Gervais has started a Twitter war with Eye of the Hunter co-host Rebecca Francis, over a photo of her posing with a dead giraffe. On Monday, April 13, he posted a picture of her smiling serenely with her freshly killed game, and questioned the state of her emotional and mental health.

After Gervais posted the bizarre and unsettling photograph, the Internet went mad, and even issued death threats to Francis.

No, I don't really understand why she's so smiley in the pic, but I also won't jump to conclusions about what happened here. If she shot the giraffe just for the hell of it, than I agree that that's a terrible thing to do. But what's the real story here?

Francis responded with a statement the next day, on HuntingLife.com.

When I was in Africa five years ago I was of the mindset that I would never shoot a giraffe. I was approached toward the end of my hunt with a unique circumstance. They showed me this beautiful old bull giraffe that was wandering all alone. He had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull. He was past his breeding years and very close to death. They asked me if I would preserve this giraffe by providing all the locals with food and other means of survival. He was inevitably going to die soon and he could either be wasted or utilized by the local people. I chose to honor his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second. Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewelry, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good.

Gervais only responded by posting another photo of her, this time with a dead Lion.

He mused sarcastically that she "probably killed this one to feed the poor locals too ;)"

I know nothing of this woman or her history, but I'll take her word for it that the animals she has shot were for more than just sport or game. The hunters I have known in my life have all been very responsible with their kills, making sure never to orphan babies (why do you think there are hunting seasons?), and using as much as the animal carcass as possible.

It might seem deplorable to us to eat the meat of a giraffe, but they're native to Africa, where the incident occurred. Ricky Gervais has gone on record saying he eats meat on occasion. You can't really get more organic and locally sourced than this giraffe. Shouldn't he be applauding this move?

The animal activist went back to Twitter on Thursday to address the issue again.

Agreed. Francis said it was to eat. That should be the end of it, bizarre dead giraffe smiley selfie or not.

Do you believe this woman on the circumstances of the giraffe's death?
