Latest on Melissa McCarthy & All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Makes Us Giddy

Are you guys getting excited for the all-female Ghostbusters reboot? Well, it's my pleasure to share the latest tidbit about the upcoming film—one that will probably make long-time fans of the film think, well, of course: Melissa McCarthy won't just serve as a super-funny member of the ghost-fighting quartet. She's going to be the group's fearless leader. Yes!

If you haven't heard, the new Ghostbusters has a cast of stars who are every bit as hilarious as the original actors. Bridesmaids' director Paul Feig was a genius for casting SNL alum and current actresses Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and McCarthy. And, although he says they'll all serve as equal forces on the same team, he is now admitting that McCarthy may just take center stage.

Feig was quoted by IGN as saying, "Melissa is sort of the leader of the group. But everybody will be equal. I just love a deep bench like this. Every one of those women is so strong and so funny."

In the original film, Bill Murray was, more or less, the unspoken leader of the group. Though you could argue that Wiig is as equally as big a box office draw as McCarthy, the former Mike & Molly star (who won an Emmy for her role on the show) definitely gives off leadership vibes that, as much as we love her, don't come as naturally to her hilarious, wacky costar.

More from The Stir: New All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Cast Is Frighteningly Funny

I'm sure I'm not the only one who shook her head when I first learned Feig had decided the '80s classic needed a modern-day face lift. In my opinion, very few (like, ZERO) films require updates. No offense to Johnny Depp, but if I want to see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I'm going to deal with a bit of fuzzy footage and sit through the awesome 1971 original film.

With that said, I think this Ghostbusters reboot could be the one exception to the no-more-reboots-please rule and the reason has everything to do with the incredibly talented and strong female cast.

Do you think Melissa McCarthy will make a good leader in the new Ghostbusters?
