Shailene Woodley Isn’t a Feminist, She Just Plays One in the Movies

Shailene WoodleyShailene Woodley, who stars in the Divergent series, got in massive hot water last year, after she denied she was a feminist because she "love[s] men." Ermkay, apparently Shailene thinks feminism has to do with hating men or something, and she wouldn't be the first one to think this. But, a year after that statement, she was given a chance to rephrase, rethink, and rehone what she said about feminism, and guess what, she came out with the same tired nonsense.

Shailene told Nylon magazine:

The reason why I don’t like to say that I am a feminist or I am not a feminist is because to me it’s still a label. I do not want to be defined by one thing. Why do we have to have that label to divide us? We should all be able to embrace one another regardless of our belief system and regardless of the labels that we have put upon ourselves.

Okay, what is wrong with a label? If you believe in the tenents of something, you should be proud to be associated with that label. For instance, I am totally fine with being called an animal rights activist, a writer, a volunteer, a Buddhist, etc. If you believe in what feminism stands for -- equality for women -- then why not call yourself a feminist?

Oh, I get it, because then some men may not like her. And some women may not either. It's the women who really get me. Seriously, ladies, if you've got a job or ever had a job, or went to college, you're a feminist. If you have your own bank account, you're a feminist. If you've ever taken out a mortgage, you're a feminist. If you have a credit card, you're a feminist.

It's thanks to feminism and women's rights activists down through the ages that young women can do these things they so casually take for granted and then wave off the feminist "label." There are women who fought very, very hard to make sure women today could vote, and you're not a feminist??!!

It's ironic that Shailene doesn't consider herself a feminist when she plays an ass-kicking, strong, assault-weapon toting heroine in the Divergent series.

Are YOU a feminist?
