Allison Williams Defends Dad Brian Williams & Calls Him 'Honest'

Girls star Allison Williams admits her dad Brian Williams messed up when he lied about being shot down in a helicopter in the Iraq War back in 2003. But the actress was quick to defend Williams during a Q&A with Seth Meyers at New York's 92Y, and what she has to say may change your mind about her dad.

Williams definitely made her dad proud when she bravely took on the question on everybody's mind about the long-time NBC Nightly News anchor, who has been suspended for six months. Keep in mind: she could have easily dismissed the topic, but chose instead to be open and honest about it:

This has been a really hard time. We have also been very lucky, counting our blessings. We have our health, we have each other. It's been incredible to experience the outreach from people you love, family, friends, and then people we don't even know, strangers, just reaching out saying we want him back on TV.

So, first of all: bravo to Williams for not acting like a setback (albeit, a possible major setback) in her dad's stellar career is akin to somebody in her family contracting an incurable disease. She seems to have a good deal of perspective and gratitude, which is Exhibit A that Brian and his wife did a fine job as parents.

She goes on:

It's been tough, though. Obviously, toughest on my dad, who bears the full burden of responsibility for it, but one thing the experience has not done is shake my trust and belief in him as a man. He's a really good man. He's an honest man. He's a truthful man. He has so much integrity. He cares so much about journalism. And yes, he's a really good dad. I know you can trust him because, as any good daughter does, I've tested him on that.

It must be incredibly difficult for Allison to watch her father get slammed left and right for his mistake. I'm not excusing what Williams did, but I don't believe one human error paints an accurate picture of a person's whole character. Everyone makes mistakes and even the most honest of people sometimes fail to be truthful in every situation. The majority of us are here striving to be better people, but we're going to fail miserably at times during our journey.

I don't know whether that means Williams should get another opportunity to make a fortune as the most trusted news anchor on TV. I do have my doubts. But it's a shame some will dismiss all of the good work he has done because of one fail.

Allison kept the focus on her dad, but also mentioned that she and fiance Ricky Van Veen have had to put their wedding plans on hold because of her work in Peter Pan and, of course, her dad's scandal. She seems to be a loving, sweet woman and I hope she finds time for herself soon.

Oh, and Brian is very lucky to have a daughter like her.

What do you think about what Allison referring to her dad as "honest?"
