Sam Smith Beats Out Katy Perry, Ariana Grande & Miley Cyrus at Grammy Awards

Sam SmithMirror, mirror on the wall, who is the biggest diva of them all? Is it Katy Perry? Miley Cyrus? Well, tonight, it's Sam Smith! At the 57th Grammy Awards, Smith beat out no less than Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Smith said about his bestselling album In the Lonely Hour, "Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try and get my music heard. I tried losing weight and was making awful music. It wasn't until I started being myself that people started to listen."

Wow, that's a really powerful lesson, and surely one that Miley Cyrus can appreciate. Miley, who was nominated for Bangerz, has really found herself this past year, even if that self is getting a lot of criticism because it's so far away from Hannah Montana.

And it is a lee-tle ironic that Smith talks about his music becoming successful once he found himself, since his self sounds so much like Tom Petty. Smith's megahit "Stay with Me" is so melodically similar to Petty's "I Won't Back Down," that Smith gave him a co-writing credit (thanks to a lawsuit). But the 22-year-old soul singer hasn't backed down and is enjoying huge critical and commerical success. He also won Best New Artist, beating out Iggy Azalea.

Something tells me Smith will be staying with us.
