'Golden Globes' Hosts Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Shock With Bill Cosby Rape Jokes

Golden GlobesAs past Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais found out, celebrity audiences like their jokes a little rough, but not too rough. Making fun of your "family" in a way that might touch a little too close to the truth can be as awkward as someone bringing up Uncle Joe's booze problem at Thanksgiving. Thus the audience didn't quite know how to react when everyone's favorite hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler went there with some Bill Cosby jokes that didn't pull any punches. There were some laughs, and a flash of Lena Dunham clapping, but there was also a fair amount of nervous tittering. Is this funny? Are we offended?

Beyond the spot-on impression of Cosby (especially by Tina), the jokes stood out for being the only hard-hitting ones in a monologue full of more wink-wink-nudge-nudge-we-really-love-you type jokes.

Not only was the audience torn about how to react, but Twitter was too. Most people seemed to think it was awesome, with reactions like:

But others saw it differently. In fact, quite a few people seemed to think the pair weren't making fun of Cosby, but of rape victims.

And everyone generally seemed to agree that the most dramatic reaction of the evening to the jokes came from Jessica Chastain, whose slack-jawed shock immediately went viral:

But it wasn't all Cosby. The gals also slung zingers at George Clooney, running down a list of his humanitarian lawyer wife Amal's many accomplishments before noting that it was her husband who was receiving a lifetime achievement award and the movie Gone Girl (Amy: "I go to movies to escape. I don’t want to just see myself up on the screen.") and pretty much everyone else who came into their sights.

All in all, no one Tina and Amy pointed their laser wit at came away totally unscathed but no one came away truly insulted either -- except maybe Bill Cosby. If he was watching.

Did you think the Cosby jokes went too far?
