Sam Smith Throws Some Serious Shade at Fellow Pop Stars

Sam SmithSam Smith has a serious problem with a few of his fellow pop stars -- at least with their attitudes. The "Stay With Me" singer recently chatted with funk legend Chaka Khan for V Magazine, and he threw some major shade at some of his peers. Apparently he thinks a few of them are "just awful."

The 22-year-old Grammy nominee was talking to Khan, 61, about some of his biggest musical influences, including Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Joni Mitchell, and Etta James.

"What I loved about her, which I try to do more of, is the rawness," he said about James. "She didn't care if her voice went a bit f---ed up here and there...people are so bothered at the moment about everything sounding perfect."

The Brit went on to say that he's had some not-so-great interactions with a few of his colleagues. "Even when you meet them. I won't name names, but some of these pop stars are just awful," he confessed. "And they have not even had half the success that you've had and yet you're so humble and kind."

That's not to say that he has no use for any of his fellow musicians. He partied with Taylor Swift for her 25th birthday last month, and everyone knows once you party with T-Swizzle, you're in (except Katy Perry, but Smith is reportedly friends with her too, having bonded as seatmates at the 2014 VMAs).

If we had to guess who he's alluded to, our money is on Justin Bieber. Just saying.

Khan has a theory that the attitude problem is a sign of the times. "Well, it's people skills," she said. "Talking to a screen all day long takes the human experience out. Luckily I grew up in a time when we only had a telephone at home."

In addition to also having professed love for Beyonce on several occasions, Smith also has a soft spot for Mary J. Blige, with whom he's worked with several times. When Khan asked him if he'd consider working with her on something, he replied, "Hundred percent, I'm in. I was actually thinking me, you and Mary [J. Blige] would do something."

Who do you think Sam Smith was throwing shade at?
