Lindsay Lohan Contracts Rare & Painful Disease While on Christmas Vacation

Lindsay LohanLindsay Lohan started off her Christmas vacation living the glam life in French Polynesian, chasing adventure with friends as she basked in (and tweeted about) the picturesque scenery. But on December 27, the formerly troubled star shared that she'd developed a rare and untreatable, as well as incredibly painful, disease called Chikungunya.

The 28-year-old shared some truly breathtaking photos from her trip, like this gorgeous one of a pink sky.

Then there was this one of her looking happy and healthy on Christmas day. If you live anywhere not in close proximity to the equator, be prepared to feel jealous.

But her vacation took a turn for the worse when she developed a rare and painful disease transmitted by mosquito bites. She tweeted a photo of herself on a jet ski, and warned her followers to use bug spray lest they suffer the same fate as she.

Chikungunya isn't fatal (only about 1 in 1000 die from it, according to the World Health Organization) but there isn't a cure for it, and it came be painfully debilitating. Sudden fever can last from two to seven days, along with muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.

But the worst part is the joint pain that comes with it -- and that can last for weeks, months, or even years after someone is bitten by an infected mosquito. No fun at all!

LiLo is refusing to let it get her down though -- just one day later she posted a picture with friends, and said that she wasn't going to let being sick ruin her vacation.

We hope she feels better soon! It's good to see her doing well in life these days.

Do you wear bug spray as religiously as you do sunscreen?
