Reese Witherspoon Blames Her Crappy Rom-Coms on Her Own Failing Love Life

reese witherspoonReese Witherspoon admits it - she's made quite a few box office clunkers. She'd rather forget her starring turns in films like How Do You Know and This Means War. But she has a good excuse for having such bad judgement. She blames those big screen bombs on her love life.

Apparently, when things went south with her marriage to Ryan Phillippe, so did her career. "Phew, that was a tough year that followed," she said in a 60 Minutes interview. "I got divorced the next year and I spent a few years just trying to feel better. You know, you can't really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs."

Witherspoon, whose divorce was finalized in October 2007, added. "I was just kind of floundering career-wise cause I wasn't making things I was passionate about, I was just kinda working. It was really clear the audiences weren't responding to anything I was putting out there."

While I have no doubt her divorce was painful, I have to wonder if that is really the only reason she made those regrettable script choices. It seems like the natural evolution of a star that big. They all have those black spots in their resume. Why not chuck it up to the fact that she was still learning the biz and about her abilities as an actress. Now she knows the roles that make her shine and isn’t just in it for a quick paycheck. She's one of the most gift actresses of her generation. I'd hate to think her career rested on her relationship status. Then again, a failed relationship can wreak emotional havoc on the most steely of women.

She felt her career really hit rock bottom after reading a scathing article about her work in a 2012 New Yorker article.

"I thought I was reading a profile on another actor, and somewhere at the end it said, you know, the people who are washed up, and at the end it included me, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson. It really hurt my feelings, really hurt my feelings."

Fortunately, she has nicely rebounded professionally and personally. Reese married talent agent Jim Toth in 2011 and they welcomed son Tennessee James in 2012. So it looks like she got her happy ending after all -- just in those cheesy, regrettable rom-coms.
