Amal Clooney Is 'Most Fascinating' Person of 2014, According to Barbara Walters

Amal Clooney

Last night, Barbara Walters aired her annual "Most Fascinating" special to honor those in pop culture who held our attention captive in 2014. Honorees included Oprah Winfrey, Neil Patrick Harris, Scarlett Johansson, Chelsea Handler, and Taylor Swift. But who topped the list as the number ONE most fascinating person of 2014? None other than George Clooney's new bride Amal Alamuddin Clooney!

I know she's a controversial choice because, really, the primary fascinating thing about Amal is that she managed to get the world's most elusive and eligible bachelor to finally settle down. But it's a pretty big deal considering that over the years, George famously declared to Barbara Walters on more than one occasion that he was never ever getting married again. Am I the only one dying to know what Amal did or said that captivated the attention of George so much that he proposed -- and didn't get cold feet before walking down the aisle?

Here are a few reasons I think Amal fascinated George (and therefore the rest of the world):

1. Amal speaks THREE languages -- English, Arabic, and French -- so she obviously keeps George on his toes. She can just switch languages if she doesn't want him to know what she's saying about him to her Arabic girlfriends!

2. Amal was born in Beirut, Lebanon, so it's impossible that she had a boring childhood with only cookie cutter stories to tell.

3. Amal grew up in London, studied at Oxford, and then came to New York City to attend law school at NYU. George is intellectual and passionate about politics, so I can only imagine the spirited and well informed debates they have -- that she probably wins!

4. Amal currently works for the Doughty Street firm in England and specializes in international law, human rights, extradition, and criminal law. She's the legal adviser to the King of Bahrain and also represents WikiLeaks head Julian Assange. I mean, if you're gonna impress George Clooney, you might as well have the educational cred and clients to back it up.

5. She's won a ton of awards for her work, including the all-important "2013 Hottest Barristers in London." FYI, a barrister is a lawyer in England entitled to practice as an advocate, particularly in the higher courts. I think this is even more impressive a feat than "Sexiest Man Alive"!

6. She's never ever had a bad hair day or made a misstep with her outfit choices whether heading into the courtroom or looking perfect in Oscar de la Renta on her wedding day. She's like Jackie O and Kate Middleton morphed into one immaculate being!

I admit it, take away her husband and Amal is still a beautiful and successful woman -- but by no means fascinating. But as long as she's married to George, I'm definitely going to be intrigued by everything that happens in her life -- especially that baby bump we'll be on high alert for in 2015.

Do you think Amal Clooney should have been named "Most Fascinating" of 2014?
