Well this is something we weren't expecting to hear. Joseph Duggar and his wife Kendra (Caldwell) recently started their own website to keep fans updated about the happenings in their lives, but we were thrown a curveball in their "about" section.

Despite growing up in ultra conservative, Christian homes, Joe and Kendra claim that they didn't always believe in Jesus.-placeholder

Despite growing up in ultra conservative, Christian homes, Joe and Kendra claim that they didn't always believe in Jesus.

Joe expleined that while he heard the gospel repeatedly as a child, he "had doubts" about God throughout his teenage years. He wrote, "There were times when I would think, Maybe I’m not truly a Christian. Maybe I’m just going through the motions, and I’m not truly saved." He said that it wasn't until 2012, when he was 17, that he begin to acknowledge his doubt and really examine his faith.

Kendra grew up very similarly to Joe, in a large, Christian fundamentalist family. She said that she expressed her faith in Jesus at age 4, but didn't really understand it until more than a decade later. It wasn't until she was 15 that she says she finally understood Christianity and really put her faith in Jesus.

It's sort of the last thing we expected to hear from a couple of homeschooled kids who grew up without even access to secular music or TV.-placeholder

We thought they basically lived, ate, and breathed Jesus and the Bible growing up, so to find out that even they had their doubts about the whole thing is really unexpected. Honestly, it's refreshing to hear them be honest about their faith struggles, and know that they at least examined their own beliefs, rather than just parroting back what they were taught by their parents.

Given their complicated history with their struggles with faith, it will be interesting to see how they raise their own children.-placeholder

Joe and Kendra just welcomed their first child, baby Garrett, last month. Obviously they're probably spending their time with their newborn feeding him, changing his diapers, and staring at him in awe, not preaching the gospel at him, but eventually he's going to be old enough to start learning about his parents' religion.

We have no doubt that Joe and Kendra will raise him in a Christian home, but they might take a different tactic on teaching about faith since they both struggled with theirs.

Honestly, we aren't too surprised to hear that at least one of the Duggar kids struggled with their faith.-placeholder

What is somewhat surprising is that Joe admitted it. It kind of makes us wonder what else Jim Bob and Michelle's kids have doubted about their upbringing. Who knows, maybe even some of them think Anna should have divorced Josh over his gross infidelity. Now that would take us by surprise if one of them admitted that.
