Ariana Grande Slammed by Mega Star for Being 'Silly' & 'Slithering Around'

Ariana GrandeHoly moly, did Bette Midler just passive-aggressively call Ariana Grande a whore? In an interview with The Telegraph, published Monday, November 24, the legendary triple threat ripped into young female pop stars, the "Problem" singer specifically, for using sex appeal to sell their music.

"It's terrible!" the 68-year-old said. "It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous. I mean, it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it."

The award-winning performer went on to say she doesn't blame Grande specifically, but rather those managing her career. "I wish they'd stop. But it's not my business, I'm not her mother. Or her manager," she admitted. "Maybe they tell them that's what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold."

"Whatever strictures there were have fallen apart," she reminisced about more innocent times. "And now it’s whatever you feel like doing you can do. I mean, apparently people really like to pretend they're having sex. They really like to slap each other's butts."

Can we please just take a moment to giggle over Bette Midler being flabbergasted that people "really like to slap each other's butts"? Because that's worthy of a giggle-snort.

Anyway, the "Wind Beneath My Wings" singer confessed that maybe she's the one who doesn't get it. "I mean, don't ask me. It's beyond me. I'm too old," she said. "I don't know what the end game is going to be. I don't know where you go from all that sex in your 20s. I don't know how you sustain it."

She did have some advice for up-and-coming singers like Grande. "Trust your talent," she advised. "You don't have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead. You really don't."

Hmmm ... sounds an awful lot like she thinks Ariana Grande has sold out and whored herself to get ahead. Personally, I think Ariana's sexiness has been mostly classy and likely an attempt to get away from her sweet and ditzy Cat Valentine persona from her Disney days. I say she gets a pass. Now if Ms. Midler had been talking about Miley Cyrus ... that might be a whole other thing entirely.

Do you think Bette Midler's comments about Ariana Grande were out of line?
