Why Rob Lowe's 'Shy Bladder' Has People Pissed Off

Rob Lowe

I don't know about you, but as a lifelong fan of Rob Lowe, I've been loving his new series of commercials for DirectTV. They show the cool, confident, and sexy Rob we know and love juxtaposed with polar opposite versions. They include "Super Creepy Rob Lowe," "Crazy Hairy Rob Lowe," "Far Less Attractive Rob Lowe," and my favorite, "Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe."

The whole point of the ads is that real Rob Lowe is savvy enough to make the switch from cable to DirectTV -- and his alter egos, well, not so much. To me this is a very clever concept and pretty genius to have Rob look so different! But some people just don't know how to take a joke ... namely the International Paruresis Association (IPA).

More on them in a second. First, let's watch the "Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe" ad and then we'll explain.

So, paruresis is the medical term for "shy bladder," and the organization is not amused by Rob's portrayal of a painfully awkward guy who can't pee with others in a public bathroom.

Uh, what? I'm all about sensitivity and political correctness when necessary, but this is RIDICULOUS. It wasn't mocking those who suffer from shy bladder in a mean or derogatory way. It was part of the character Rob was playing -- the same way a character can take on a number of traits from the serious to the silly -- nothing more!

But the CEO of IPA, Steve Soifer, wants the ads revoked. He told the Associated Press, "We don't mind if people have a little fun with it. It's a situation that a lot of people don't understand. In this particular case, the portrayal is making it look ridiculous, that this guy is a loser for having a problem."

Sorry, but I think IPA look like losers for using this as a press seeking opportunity over absolutely nothing. Rob Lowe even agrees, tweeting:

And of course DirectTV is not going to stop running the ad.

I really think the world would be a much calmer, happier place if we all lightened up and stopped being so sensitive. You don't see people who suffer from excessive hair growth lashing out over "Crazy Hairy Rob Lowe"! Why? Because these commercials are funny and done in good taste. Quite honestly, if you do suffer from a shy bladder, I feel for you -- but don't you think humor is a better way to deal with it?

Are you offended by these ads?
