Angelina Jolie’s Ex Opens Up About Her Weird Blood Obsession

Angelina JolieAngelina Jolie may be the epitome of grace and elegance now, but it wasn't so long ago that the earth mother ran a little bit on the wild side. Like when she was married to Billy Bob Thornton, and they wore vials of each other's blood around their necks.

Billy Bob recently opened up on how that strange little love symbol came to be, and why he and Angie didn't really think it was crazy at the time.

The Academy Award winner was speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University's School of Film & Television last week when he was asked about the infamous vials of blood he and Jolie donned when they were married briefly in the early 2000s.

"[A] vial of blood is very simple. Angie came home one day with a kit she bought," he said. "You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your grannie in it or something like that and wear it around your neck? That's what it was. She bought two of those. We were apart a lot because she's off making Tomb Raider and I'm making Monster's Ball. We were on opposite ends -- we see each other for two weeks and whatever."

He continued, "She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter's baby hair in one. Same thing."

He then joked, "From that we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks ... and we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon."

Heh. Maybe not vampires ... but it is a little creepy. Thornton did tell the audience that he laments  that people aren't more honest and truthful about such things. He admitted, "I think it's your duty to kind of tell people the truth about this stuff and the truth is not encouraged anymore."

Well, when you put it that way ... nope, it's still weird. But isn't that what we love most about Angelina? That she owns her weirdness unapologetically, and isn't afraid to just be herself.

Would you ever wear someone else's blood as a romantic gesture?
