Jordin Sparks & Jason Derulo Come Clean About the Real Reason They Split

Jordin Sparks, Jason Derulo

Sad day! Cutie patootie couple Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks have called it quits after three years of dating. They started getting cozy in 2011, and just last month, he said that he had written the song "Marry Me" to assure the American Idol winner that a proposal was imminent.

But now it seems as though that dream is lost, and with all the rumors swirling around, both stars have come clean about the real reason they broke up.

They just weren't getting along anymore.

Actually, given what Derulo said last month when he claimed he wanted to marry her, it makes total sense. He told Nightline, "[She's] just the sweetest, always thinking about others before she thinks about herself. Super charitable ... we're such opposites, like, just polar, and I think that's what works."

Yeah ... opposite attract ... but they rarely work out in the long run.

But they seem to have parted pretty amicably. Sparks took to Twitter and posted, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened," and changed her avatar from one of them together to her looking sexy and single in a white bra.

Derulo opened up to ABC News about it, saying, "Though I think it is a private matter and intended to keep my breakup with Jordin personal, due to bogus and irresponsible lies being reported by insensitive media outlets, it became necessary for me to comment ... I spent three great years with Jordin and she is one of the most amazing people that I have ever met. But as in all relationships there are ups and downs and at this time we have decided to amicably part. Infidelity, cheating, or deceit played no part in our relationship or our breakup, and I hope that people respect our privacy as we move forward with our lives."

So there you go. They were looking down the pike at possible marriage and decided it wasn't going to work. They parted ways. That's pretty dang mature for two 20-somethings in Hollywood.

Have you ever had a drama-free breakup?
