Chris Brown Gives Ray Rice Advice He Should Take (VIDEO)

Chris BrownListen up, Chris Brown has some advice for Ray Rice -- stop beating your wife! Yeah, Brown, who was famously arrested after punching his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, has been on probation ever since. And he's also been getting therapy. And he thinks he knows why he did what he did and how Ray can learn to stop the cycle of domestic violence.

Brown told MTV's Sway:

I think it's all about the choices you make. With me, I deal with a lot of anger issues from my past -- not knowing how to express myself verbally and at the same time not knowing how to cope with my emotions and deal with them and understand what they are. So I think help is great. I still talk to my therapist twice a week, and it helps me to ... if I’m frustrated and I’m dealing with something, to vent and say what I’m going through so I can hear from an actual clinical person, 'this is how you should react,' or 'it’s good to feel this way because feelings, emotions, and energy are supposed to come and go. It's not supposed to stay there, you’re not supposed to keep it inside, because it’ll bottle up and you’ll become a monster.'

Though Brown hasn't exactly been trouble-free since his assault arrest, quite the opposite actually, we haven't heard anything from Rihanna or his girlfriend Karreuche Tran that would indicate he still has a problem hitting women. That doesn't mean it's not happening, but it's good that he acknowledges he has a serious issue and that he needs professional help and continues to get it. The first, the biggest, the main step is realizing that the problem is YOU and not someone else.

While your past may be what is driving you to react in certain ways, as an adult, you've got to take responsibility for your choices. It sounds like Chris might actually be doing that. Let's hope.

He added:

To Ray, or anybody else. Because I’m not better than the next man -- I can just say I’ve been down that road. I deal with situations and I've made my mistakes too, but it's all about how you push forward and how you control yourself.

Chris could have insisted that Sway not ask him about Ray -- he could have insisted that the past is the past and the Rihanna incident was behind him and he didn't want to be associated with that any longer. But instead he spoke out, which takes courage. Hopefully there are young men out there who may have the same problem who will listen to Chris that therapy is acceptable.

It's time we started talking about why men hit and not just why women stay, and it's awesome that Chris Brown was willing to open that dialogue.
