Ellen Pompeo Wants to Quit Acting After 'Grey's Anatomy' Ends Its Epic Run

Ellen PompeoEllen Pompeo has had quite the run on Grey's Anatomy, playing the title character Meredith Grey since its inception in 2005, and recently the star admitted that that might be enough for her to hang up her acting shoes for good.

On Wednesday September 10, the actress sat down for a BuzzFeed-hosted panel with Kerry Washington and Viola Davis (who also star in Shonda Rhimes-created shows), and confessed that she may quit acting after she's done with Grey's.

The gorgeous 44-year-old said, "I definitely don't have a strong desire to act after Grey's ... I definitely feel myself transitioning," the actress continued. "I don't find acting terribly empowering. For the place I am in my life ... I don't necessarily want to work for other people."

It's possible she's thinking of switching sides of the camera -- in 2011, she launched her own production company, Calamity Jane.

She continued, "I feel like the acting has been a wonderful opportunity, and I've just done so much of it over the past 11 years ... Grey's is in 97 countries or something and we've had this blessing of all these wonderful fans who still love us 10 years later. I feel like I did it and I don't have anything left to prove, and I'd like to try to challenge myself."

Poking fun at the lack of awards the show has received despite its loyal fan-base, she added, "Maybe part of my personality is I feel like I have something to prove sometimes ... and with acting, I don't feel like I have anything to prove anymore -- even though I have no awards!"

Have no fear, Pompeo fans -- she isn't planning on quitting the show anytime soon. She and co-star Patrick Dempsey have already signed on for seasons 12 and 13, so there will be at least two more years of Meredith Grey to enjoy.

Besides, nothing has been decided or set in stone yet. Ellen made sure to add a caveat. "I mean, never say never," she said. "I'm not going to come out and make one of those statements like, 'I'm retiring after' and then in February come back. I try to keep an open heart, an open mind, an open soul and spirit to whatever comes my way, and whatever is meant to be for me will be."
