Robin Williams' Emmy Awards Tribute by Billy Crystal Said It All

Robin WilliamsThe 66th Annual Emmy Awards In Memoriam segment was particularly touching this year. There is no doubt that 2014 saw an enormous amount of talent pass on. The most unexpected, however, was Robin Williams. The surreally talented comedian and actor committed suicide this year and the world was shocked and saddened. Billy Crystal, who headed up Comic Relief with Robin and Whoopi Goldberg, and who was friends with Robin for 20 years, paid tribute to his pal and inspiration.

Billy said of Robin, "He made us laugh. Hard. Every time we saw him." Billy reminisced about how Robin was not only hysterical on stage, but pretty much anywhere else he was -- whether it was a baseball game, a family gathering (where he sat amusing Billy's immigrant elders), or in the living room of a dying little girl whose last wish was to meet Robin.

As a friend, Billy called him, "Supportive, protective, loving. It's hard to talk about him in the past tense because he was always so present."

A montage of some of Robin's moments came on screen, and you can't even call them his best moments, because if you played those, it would have been a 72-hour-long show. But in one quick clip, Robin quipped, "God gave us a penis and a brain but only enough blood to run one at a time."

Billy said that Robin was "for 40 years, the brightest star in the comedy galaxy."

His fans are still in mourning, so I can only imagine what his friends and family are going through. Somewhere, Robin is looking down, and smiling and tearing up with us.

Other talent lost this year included Paul Walker, Casey Kasem, Paul Mazursky, Ann B. Davis, Eli Wallach, Hal Cooper, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Peter O'Toole, Don Pardo, David Brenner, Shirley Temple, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Lauren Bacall, Elaine Stritch, Harold Ramis, James Garner, Joan Fontaine, and Maya Angelou.

Surely heaven just got a bit more interesting -- and definitely a lot funnier.
